Contests and prizing has come to an end for the season here at WWYC. We’ve had a great time meeting people online and on the streets, and heard some great feedback and a ton of inspiring ideas.

When we set out on this adventure we wanted to get people thinking about changes they wanted to make, and how to get there. Some ideas we knew we’d hear, but many surprised us with their creativity.

To all the winners – Congratulations! Without people like you, with bright ideas for change, well, there would be less hope for us all.

So, what’s next? Well, that’s a good question. We’re looking at ways to make the site more useful for you. Tools to help you find the steps along the way to making the change you want, and more ways to save and share your changes and your thoughts on others’ contributions.

With that, I leave you with a few of my personal favorite submissions.

First, Sandeep007 definitely gets the active-user award. He submitted many a change, all of which are positive. The one I really like is “Spring in 2050” where he changed a change he changed – Creating a change scene, and changing it a few more times to get to the final result.

Next are a couple of pertinent and positive changes about breaking down borders and achieving peace:

And Finally, because I’m all about every little thing making a difference, wnam’s change about skytrain seating caught my attention. It’s local, it’s practical, and as a transiteer I tend to like anything that makes the ride a little more comfortable.

Peace, I hope to see you soon when version 2.0 rolls out onto this open range we call the web.

If there were one thing you could do, your very own best job in the world, what would it be?

Would you be wandering with wildlife in wetlands, making the next great mobile device in the highest of high-tech research labs, or touring the globe on your very own jet ?Heck, maybe you’re even your own pilot.

We want to know whatever it is you’d love to be doing and wherever it is you’d love to be doing it.

Show us yours – whether it’s the job, the tools of the trade, or the location-location-location, any scene tagged with best-job gets you in the running for $50 in music-money.*

It’s always better to have something to listen to while you’re working towards that goal.

What’s your Best job in the world?

*iTunes Gift card. Contest details here.

Here we are in the last few days of March. In Metro Vancouver the Cherry Blossom Festival is kicking off, Juno Fest starts today, and lots of people are getting ready to take in a few great flicks at the Projecting Change Film Festival.

There’s a tonne of stuff to do that won’t put tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, which is one of my favourite things about spring.

Winter activities are great and all, but they always require more stuff – whether that’s clothing or fuel – to keep you warm.

In spring we get to start using less to do more, which supports a lot of the changes people are talking about here on whatwouldyouchange.ca.

It’s how we can make our world healthier and more sustainable, get in better shape, and keep public spaces full of happy people.

Talking about doing more with less, this Friday we’re celebrating the completion of phase 1 of a solar-canopy project with UBC and BCIT. Come by and check it out if you have a chance.

Mid-March is upon us, that means the majority of us in school, college, university, or something similar aren’t actually at any of those learning institutions at the moment but are instead, on spring break.

Here at whatwouldyouchange.ca we’re paying tribute to spring by paying one of you $50 in music-money for iTunes. Members can make a change and tag it with bringonspring to be entered to win.

Other than that, we just spent the first real day of spring break up at Cypress mountain recording videos of people – mostly grinning madly at the fresh snowfall – telling us what they’d change about anything and everything.

It looked a little like this:

Winter on Cypress Mountain

Which is probably part of why we're so keen on spring. Not that the snow isn't gorgeous, but it's March now right. Right?!? Anyway, watch for those videos to be up within the next few days or so.

Just a quick post to point out a cool event put on by the BCIT Student Association.

From 10AM to 4pm on February 5th they are hosting Eco Fair 2009 at BCIT’s Burnaby Campus.

Here’s .

It’s definitely worth checking out, there are great vendors and keynotes by some impressive speakers.

If you have a chance make your way out.

I found an interesting article on Antarctica warming up, and why in some places it appeared to be cooling.

This quote got me thinking:

As ozone was depleted, less radiation was absorbed at this layer of the atmosphere, which altered the layering of temperatures over Antarctica, over which the largest ozone "hole" is found (it's not really a hole, but rather a region of extreme thinning). This in turn altered wind patterns and strengthened the circumpolar vortex, creating a wall of winds that isolated the cold air over Antarctica from the warm air over the South Pacific Ocean, Mann explained.

Livescience.com

Regardless of whether you’re a believer in climate change or a skeptic we pretty much all agree that consuming and polluting less is a good thing. What the quote made me think is that maybe the best way to put the debate to rest is to drastically reduce our consumption and emissions, and carefully measure the results over a long period of time. That way whatever happens we’ll be able to better understand the effects of our actions.

Anyway, that’s sort of a longwinded way to get to my point that there are more and more green things happening at BCIT.

First up, Achieving Business Excellence named our campuses Canada’s greenest. I’ve linked to the article, but you can read the official release from BCIT too. That kind of thing doesn’t happen without hard work, so I’m proud to be at an institution with a real commitment to changing the way things are done.

I also want to mention the 2008 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO® League competitions happening at BCIT.

Why?

Two reasons:

  1. Lego rules. You can’t debate that unless you’re a parent sick of stepping on the stuff.
  2. The missions for the latest competition were all focused on climate.

Hundreds of middle school children descended on BCIT and did battle with robots programmed to explore greenhouse gasses, wildlife, and preparing for different climate conditions. Cool stuff, and congratulations to the students from Sullivan Heights Secondary! There’s a video of their robots on the homepage, check it out.

Good luck in Atlanta!

We’ve just launched our first online only contest here at wwyc. We’re giving away a $50 iTunes gift certificate* to the best change by a star user tagged as “xmasxchange”.

Whether or not you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Festivus, the solstice, or just happened to get a random gift you just can’t stand – We want to see what you’d change it into, and you might just get a little something in return.

To enter just become a star user (don't worry, it's free), create a change scene and tag it with xmasxchange to be entered to win. You'll need an account, if you don't already have one sign-up now.

*Now improved with no DRM! We won't say this contest is what made Apple do it, but really, we're all about change and it changed... Draw your own conclusions

Hi and Welcome

So you may be wondering what all this is about. Let me cut to the chase: We're the British Columbia Institute of Technology, and we're interested in understanding how people want to change -- the world, themselves, their lives, anything.

We know the world is changing, especially when it comes to the way we interact with each other. With whatwouldyouchange.ca, we've tried to provide a place where you can show us or tell us how you want to change.

We'd also like to show you, and tell you, without the spin, what BCIT is like. Who knows? maybe we'll change the way you think about BCIT, or, if you've never heard of us, get you thinking about us in the first place. Either works for us.

We're just getting started here, but we'll be hosting various contests for things like iTunes gift cards, an iPod Touch (or two) and a Nintendo Wii. We may even pay a lucky student's BCIT tuition fees. All you have to do is get involved.
